This 6 hour workshop will be lead by 2018 CONDA nominees for "Best New Work" Riley McLean and Nicholas Thouroughood. They will guide you through your creative process and provide insight into how to structure a script, how to get through writer's block and how to go about staging new works in Newcastle and the Hunter. This workshop is suitable for all ages.

Dance Workshop (Beginners)

With 15 years of experience behind her, our Tutor Ashlyn Horder will guide you through some dance basics to help build confidence and technique during a 2 hour workshop. This is a perfect preparatory workshop for the Musical Theatre Intensive. This workshop is suitable for children and young adults (8yo to 21yo).

Basic Theatre Makeup Tutorial

Tuesday 15 January 2019 at 5:00pm


This 1 hour tutorial will provide you with hands on experience creating a natural makeup look that translates to the stage. You will be guided by Leilani Boughton and Aimee Cavanagh who will ensure that by the end of the hour, you feel confident applying your own makeup for shows. This workshop has very limited places but other sessions may open once full. You will need to bring a 'basic makeup kit' and will be emailed with details of what that entails. This workshop is suitable for all ages.

This two hour workshop will give you the tools and confidence you need to prepare for an audition. Our Head Tutor Leilani will guide you through picking a monologue, character development, and how to improve your cold reading. This workshop is suitable for ages 18 and up.

Improvisation Workshop (Basics)

Thursday 17 January 2019 at 4:00pm


This two hour workshop run by our Head Tutor Leilani Boughton will be a great refresher or a perfect beginners crash course in improvisation. Learn how to give the perfect offer and carry a scene on the fly. This one is sure to be a lot of fun and is suitable for children and young adults aged 8 to 21.

This two hour workshop is perfect for performers wishing to brush up on their basics as well as newbies wishing to gain some knowledge and confidence before auditioning for a production. Our Head Tutor Leilani Boughton will take the group through vocal technique, how to move on stage and how to tackle a script. This workshop is for people over the age of 18.

Directors Workshop (Create and Manage)

Friday 18 January 2019 at 12:00pm


Our Head Tutor Leilani Boughton will guide you through the process of preparing for a production when you are a director. You will spend 4 hours creating a "vision", learning how to communicate your vision, discussing the importance of balancing a cast and how to run a rehearsal. You will look at scheduling and design as well as blocking and nursing actor egos. This crash course in directing is suitable for ages 12 and up.

Musical Theatre Intensive (Full Day)

Sunday 20 January 2019 at 10:00am


This 6 hour intensive will give you the opportunity to create a high quality Musical Theatre performance from scratch. Our tutors Zac Smith and Ashlyn Horder will guide you through vocals, movement and performance techniques. Please bring water, lunch, flexible clothing and a great work ethic! Parents will be invited to attend during the final 15 minutes of the workshop to see a performance of the piece. This workshop is suitable for children and young adults aged 8 to 21.

Puppet Yum Cha

Sunday 20 January 2019 at 11:00am

 

Puppetry Yum Cha gives workshop participants to experience a 'taster' of different types of puppets. This workshop only has a limited number of spaces and is hosted by Kay Yasugi, a Sydney-based puppeteer, puppet maker and teacher. Participants will learn the basics of how to operate various forms of puppetry and puppet making techniques, as well as practicing simple performance skills. Puppetry Yum Cha is suitable for older children and adults, with no prior puppetry experience required.

Improvisation Intensive

Monday 21 January 2019 at 2:00pm


The fabulous Claire Thomas will run you through a series of Improvisation activities while reinforcing improvisation theory using practical engagement. This 3 hour workshop will hone your already existing improvisation skills and is perfect for students wishing to compete in theatre sports during 2019. This workshop is suitable for children and young adults aged 12 to 21.

Singing Masterclass

Tuesday 22 January 2019 at 4:00pm

 

Industry trained tutor Maddie Watts will guide small groups through 1.5 hours of vocal training. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in improving their vocal performance but unable to commit to weekly singing lessons and is a perfect follow up to our Musical Theatre Intensive. The Singing Masterclass is open to children and young adults aged 8 to 21. Extra session may become available.

How to Teach a Drama Class

Wednesday 23 January 2019 at 3:30pm


This workshop is a great opportunity to gain insight into planning and running extra curricular drama classes. Claire Thomas will lead this 3 hour workshop and provide classroom management training as well as insight into lesson planning and content creation. This workshop is free for current tutors at MRT but is suitable for anyone wishing to tutor with us in 2019 or the future.

Lighting Workshop (Tech and Design)

Thursday 24 January 2019 at 1:00pm

 

This four hour workshop will be lead by Nicholas Simpson and Leilani Boughton. They will take you through WHS, rigging, plotting and programming as well as lighting design and concept. This program is ideal for anyone interested in the technical aspects of Maitland Repertory or for upcoming directors who wish to discover more ways to add mood with lighting. This workshop is open to children and adults ages 12 and up.
